Phillies manager Pete Mackanin is following through with the first-base platoon he utilized late last season and discussed in the winter and spring. With the Phillies facing left-hander Brandon Finnegan in the second game of the season, Darin Ruf replaces Ryan Howard.

Ruf, 29, earned regular playing time against lefties by hitting .371 with a 1.107 OPS against them in 114 plate appearances last season. In those PAs, Ruf had eight home runs, four doubles and nearly as many walks as strikeouts.

Another Phillies veteran, catcher Carlos Ruiz, sits after starting the opener. Cameron Rupp is in the lineup batting sixth. Rupp will be the Phils' regular catcher this season. He, too, raised his game against opposite-handed pitchers in 2015, hitting .303 with nine extra-base hits in 66 at-bats.

Rule 5 pick Tyler Goeddel makes his major-league debut in right field. Goeddel will platoon in the corner outfield with left-handed hitting Cedric Hunter.
