PITTSBURGH – This is no surprise.

Ryan Howard, who was limping badly as he walked down the concourse outside the Phillies’ clubhouse at PNC Park late Tuesday night, is not in manager Charlie Manuel’s lineup for Game 2 of the Phils’ three-game series with the Pirates.

Howard went 2-for-4 on Tuesday night with an RBI single in the sixth, but he said his knee was bothering him after he was forced to sprint 270 feet -- first to home -- on Delmon Young’s double later in the sixth.

“My knee hurt,” he said Tuesday night. “I had time to rest there when I wasn’t running the bases a whole lot [and] my knee felt better. [But I had to do] a lot of running around on it.”

Howard has battled knee soreness all year. He’s started 72 of the Phillies’ 84 games this year and is hitting .267 but with only 10 homers and 42 RBIs.

“It’s about the same [as before],” he said. “It's always sore.”

The fact that the Pirates are throwing a tough left-hander, Jeff Locke (7-1, 2.06), makes the decision even easier (see game notes). Howard is hitting just .171 against lefties this year as opposed to .303 against righties.

With Howard out, John Mayberry will play first base and bat sixth, and Domonic Brown, who’s sixth in the majors with 21 homers, will bat cleanup.

Here’s the full lineup:

1. Michael Young, 3B
2. Chase Utley, 2B
3. Jimmy Rollins, SS
4. Dom Brown, LF
5. Delmon Young, RF
6. John Mayberry, 1B
7. Ben Revere, CF
8. Carlos Ruiz, C
9. John Lannan, P
