For just the sixth time in 74 games, the Phillies have their projected starting lineup on the field.
Chase Utley’s activation coupled with Carlos Ruiz’s return earlier in the week gives the Phils a much more formidable lineup than they had previously been trotting out. Utley bats second in his first game back.
Charlie Manuel said Wednesday that he didn’t like the idea of having four of his first five hitters bat from the left side. Had Ben Revere stayed in the leadoff spot, that would have been the case even if switch-hitting Jimmy Rollins batted third. To avoid this issue, Manuel moved Revere down to seventh, Rollins back to leadoff and Michael Young back to the three-hole.
Rollins hit 30 points worse in 22 games in the three-hole than he did in 33 games leading off, but his OBP batting third was .359 compared to .306 when batting first.
Here is tonight’s lineup against Mets right-hander Jeremy Hefner:
1) Jimmy Rollins, SS
2) Chase Utley, 2B (Phils 2B hit .179/.250/.189 in his absence)
3) Michael Young, 3B
4) Ryan Howard, 1B
5) Domonic Brown, LF (5 for 37, two RBIs last 10 games)
6) Delmon Young, RF
7) Ben Revere, CF
8) Carlos Ruiz, C (fifth time catching Hamels this season)
9) Cole Hamels, P
