Kevin Frandsen is playing second base for Chase Utley on Tuesday night against the Indians, but according to manager Charlie Manuel, opposing pitcher Scott Kazmir’s left-handedness wasn't the deciding factor.
“That didn’t have much to do with it,” Manuel said. “Utley hit a home run in the World Series off [Kazmir]. Who knows, he might hit a pinch-hit one off him.
“I think it'll be good for Ut. Try to monitor him, keep him off his feet at times.”
Getting Frandsen -- who has hit .405 with a .582 slugging percentage vs. lefties as a Phillie, in the lineup makes sense -- but removing Utley, who went 4 for 5 Sunday, on the first game of a homestand was a bit strange, especially with two off days this week. That said, there has been no indication that Utley is hurt.
“If he plays 140, 142 games, with off days we have, I think that would be very passable,” Manuel said of Utley.
John Mayberry starts for Ben Revere in centerfield against the lefty. Manuel isn’t giving up on Revere yet, despite the speedster’s .286 on-base percentage. He’s just going with a hunch.
“I'll stick with Ben a little while longer,” he said. “I shouldn't say a little while longer. … I'll stick with him. That means he'll get a good chance. I look at him as our centerfielder. I look at Mayberry in there tonight, he’s played good in some series, I thought maybe that hitting eighth he might have a chance to hit [a homer] or do something good for us.”
Manuel wouldn't say whether reliever Mike Adams, who is suffering from back spasms, would be available for Tuesday's game. But the manager didn't sound overly optimistic, so it is likely the Phils will be without their setup man in the opener vs. Cleveland.
