The baseball world was buzzing last week when it first learned about Chase Utley taking ground balls at third base hours before a game at Citizens Bank Park. We discussed the viability of Utley working at the hot corner then, and basically concluded that "it's too early to tell anything but Chase won't know if he can actually play at 3B if he doesn't try."
Utley continued to examine the viability of a position change this afternoon and worked at third again prior to the Phillies game at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. Chase lamented last week that he was hoping to keep the workout at third under the radar. And today, cameras were there to document some of his drills.
[UPDATE: we could not get approval to use the video. They did show it during the Phillies-Reds telecast and Utley was wearing some strange shirt.]
CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury was in Cincy and talked with infield coach Sam Perlozzo who worked with Chase:
“Basically we’re just trying to introduce him to different things
he might see over there to see if this can be a viable option," Perlozzo said.
Chase made a fine diving defensive play during tonight's game against the Reds at his normal position of second base, of course.
