Dom Browns Big Break? No Timetable for Delmon Young to Play

Share

When the Phillies acquired Delmon Young, Ruben Amaro Jr. all
but grabbed the lineup card out of Charlie Manuel’s hand and wrote the 2012
ALCS MVP’s name in at right field himself. Domonic Brown may still have
something to say about that though, especially while Young isn’t even able to
get on the field.

Reports from spring training on Friday say Young, who
underwent microfracture surgery on his ankle in the offseason, has yet to be cleared
to play by doctors.
And when might the troubled-yet-talented righthander become
available? Maybe not even in time for opening day.

"The ankle is feeling good but
I'm not a doctor," Young said. "So when the doctor tells me when
everything will be ready, I'll be out there. I'm not going to put any date on
it."

While Young is taking cuts in the cage and presumably does
whatever it takes to keep his weight down, Brown should be putting in some
serious work in right field. If the 25 year old impresses, he could finally
seize a job in the Phillies’ outfield, especially if Young’s absence becomes
protracted.

Not much of a competition when only one player is competing.

It’s not a given Young will miss that much action, but
obviously the person with the most to gain from this is Dom Brown, who tells
reporters he would prefer to either sink or swim. Honestly, that
might be all he needs – an opportunity to go out and play every day. Looks like
he might get that chance for now at least.

We’re definitely rooting for Brown, who has already
experienced some of the highs and lows of playing in Philadelphia during his
short career. That said, Young's bat can help the Phillies if he’s healthy and in
shape, so we hope this situation doesn’t last very long.
