While many of you think of the Mets only as a punchline to so many wonderful jokes, they have done a number of things this offseason to try and improve their ball club. Perhaps the most visible is the ousting of both Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya.

The Mets have actually gotten off to a winning start to 2011 with a two games to one series win over the Marlins to kick off the season. Their new skipper, Terry Collins, is a guy who Mets fans apparently respect.

But check out this quote from Andy Martino:

“Last year by this point, we were like, ‘Get us the (heck) out of  here,’” one Met told Martino. “This year, (Collins) is keeping it fun.  We actually like coming in every day.”

Just to be clear, "by this point" seemingly means three games into the season. Imagine how they felt in September.

That said, a new coach and a fresh start can do wonders for a club. Just look at the Eddie Jordan-Doug Collins differential. So let's not take the Mets too lightly this season, at least not until they decide to pack it in and say "get us the [heck] out of here."
