Our Favorite Pedro Martinez as a Phillie Moment

Pedro Martinez told reporters over the weekend that he'll be making his retirement from baseball official in the coming weeks. He last pitched in Game 6 of the 2009 World Series while wearing a Philadelphia Phillies uniform.

While Pedro's time in Philly was short, it was not without it's fantastic moments. I attended Game 2 of the 2009 World Series in which Pedro started and heard the loud "Who's Your Daddy!" chants throughout Yankee Stadium, but my fondest memory of Pedro was when Charlie Manuel walked out to the mound in the eighth inning in a September 2009 game against the Mets. It was perhaps the final true gem in a Hall of Fame career.

The old goat still has some fight left in him, that's for sure. Pedro Martinez pitched eight shutout innings, throwing a hefty 130 pitches en route to a 1-0 Phillies win. Martinez's pitch count was climbing after the seventh and most thought his night was over at that point. Pedro came back out for the eighth and was still throwing heat. After allowing a double to Daniel Murphy, Uncle Cholly trotted out to the mound, seemingly putting an end to Pedro's day. But after a brief chat with Martinez, Manuel headed back to the dugout to an eruption of cheers from the Citizens Bank Park faithful. Just three pitches later, Daniel Murphy made a base running blunder and Chooch nailed him at third. CBP was electric.

Those "Pay-dro! Pay-dro!" chants were something special.

Then, of course, was the time we got to sit down and chat with Martinez for a good 15+ minutes the following summer. By far the most fun we've ever had interviewing any athlete.
