Here's basically what seems to have happened regarding the Chase Utley taking ground balls at third base situation.
Chase asked Ruben Amaro Jr. at some point over the past few days if he can play third base. "Can you?" Ruben asked back.
To which Utley responded, "I don't know, can I?"
That seems to be the gist of it. But how can you know if you don't try?
So Utley took some ground balls at third base today. It's too early to tell anything at this point, say all involved.
Utley did explore playing third about 10 years ago and that experiment did not go so well. His arm strength was not the best. But a lot can happen in 10 years.
With Placido Polanco looking like less and less of an option in 2013, the Phillies will need to find an answer at that position. The production they've gotten from 3B has fallen dramatically. The free agent options are limited, and if Utley could transition to the hot corner, it could allow Freddy Galvis to play regularly at second.
One key takeaway from all of this, however: you can't keep anything under the radar these days, Chase.
