SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Sixers fell behind the Knicks early and trailed by as many as 22 points before suffering an 84-77 loss in a preseason game at the Carrier Dome on Tuesday night.

The Sixers shot 38.1 percent from the field and just 11.1 percent from three-point range.

The Sixers are 1-3 in the preseason.

Turning point
The Sixers simply didn’t play well in the first quarter. They made just three field goals and turned the ball over six times. They were down 23-11 at the end of the period.

Follow the leader
Nerlens Noel scored eight first-half points, grabbed five rebounds and picked up two steals.

Noel finished the game with 12 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, one block and four steals. He also made 6 of 8 free-throw attempts.

Luc Mbah a Moute added 11 points, while Henry Sims scored 10. Sims was 8 for 8 at the foul line, but just 1 for 11 from the field.

Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 17 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds and handed out three assists. Anthony did not play in the fourth quarter.

The Sixers were 8 for 33 from the field in the first half, including 1 for 10 from behind the arc.

They did manage to make 12 of 14 first-half free-throw attempts.

Take a bow
Undrafted rookie JaKarr Sampson made his first start on Tuesday. The 6-foot-9 forward contributed nine points on 3-for-4 shooting and grabbed four rebounds.

Former Sixer Jason Smith scored 14 points off the bench for New York.

What’s next?
The Sixers play Boston for a second time this preseason on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Sixers lost to the Celtics in the first meeting, 98-78. The Sixers committed 28 turnovers compared to 14 assists in that game.

The Sixers started that contest outscoring Boston 18-8, but it was Boston’s 19-4 run to open the fourth quarter that ultimately led to the loss.
