Reports: Sixers' Richaun Holmes fractures elbow vs. Jazz

All Richaun Holmes wanted was a chance. He was confident his motor and attention to detail would shine through in the end.

“Everything I can control, I do it to the best of my ability,” Holmes said after Tuesday night’s win over the Celtics in the Utah Jazz Summer League (see story). “I just come in and give maximum effort and maximum communication and do whatever I can to help the team win.”

But that high intensity may have come back to bite him on Thursday night. In the Sixers’ 84-78 overtime loss to the Jazz, Holmes suffered a fractured elbow and will miss six to eight weeks, according to Shams Charania of RealGM and Jake Fischer of Liberty Ballers.

With the Sixers clinging to a 70-68 lead with 2:35 to play, Holmes tracked down Jazz guard Wesley Saunders, who went up for a layup in transition. Holmes got a piece of the ball, but came down hard on his right elbow underneath the basket. He immediately grabbed the elbow and headed to the bench, where he was tended to by trainers. The team has yet to make an announcement, and coach Billy Lange didn't know the extent of the injury.

"He banged his funny bone, and we're going to get an X-ray on it just as a precautionary," Lange said. "Beyond that I don't know much."

Holmes, a second-round pick (37th overall) out of Bowling Green, had his best game of the summer league in Tuesday’s win, totaling 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocks in 18 minutes.

The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 9.7 points and 4.7 rebounds in 16.7 minutes per game over three games. He shot 42.3 percent (11 for 26) overall.

The Sixers wrapped up Utah Jazz Summer League play Thursday night, finishing with a 1-2 record. They head to Las Vegas where play will begin Friday and continue through July 20.
