Sixers Keeper or Not? Furkan Aldemir

Share

During the NBA All-Star break, we'll take a look at some of the Sixers’ newcomers and their prospects for the future with the team.

Player: Furkan Aldemir
Height: 6-9
Weight: 220
Position: Power forward

Strengths and weaknesses
Aldemir is a rebounder. He has a nose for defensive rebounds and for finding his position in the paint on defense. However, he isn’t much of a shooter. It’s tough to determine whether Aldemir has a mid-range game, because he rarely shoots it. In his 19 games, he has attempted just five shots from 10 feet or longer and just 11 shots from deeper than three feet.

Performance so far
Incomplete. Aldemir hasn’t appeared in a game since Jan. 31 and hasn’t played more than 10 minutes since Jan. 24. A late arrival to the team, Aldemir started the season in the Euroleague and showed promise as a rebounder in 19 games with the Sixers.

However, Aldemir fell out of head coach Brett Brown’s rotation and hasn’t won his way back in yet.

Highs
Aldemir had 10 rebounds and zero points in 19 minutes on Jan. 5, a Sixers victory over Cleveland. In doing so, he became the first Sixer to pull the feat since Reggie Evans in 2007 and just the second Sixer to do it since records were kept back to 1985.

That 10-rebound game was sandwiched between a pair of games when he averaged 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 points in 16 minutes per game.

Yes, Aldemir is a rebounder. Averaged out, he gets 18 rebounds every 48 minutes.

Lows
It’s tough to top the five straight DNP-CDs heading into the break.

Secure or need to see more?
Lately he’s been a sitter. However, Aldemir’s ability to rebound is his one NBA-level skill. Certainly the league always has a spot for guys who get rebounds and set up their teammates, and especially ones who are under team control.

Acquired along with Royce White in a deal with Houston, Aldemir signed a four-year, $12 million contract with the Sixers in December with the first two seasons guaranteed. That means Aldemir is going to get every chance to succeed — or fail — with the Sixers.
