Evan Turner: ‘If you build it, they will come'

The Sixers announced a crowd of 6,315 at the Wells Fargo Center for Monday's 30-point loss to the Nets at the Wells Fargo Center. In a building that holds approximately 20,000, the small group of fans barely filled the lower bowl.

Evan Turner said he didn’t expect too many people to venture out on a Columbus Day to watch exhibition basketball.

“I mean, I didn’t really expect anybody to be out there. It’s preseason,” Turner said.

But there is one way to get the fans out.

Win.

“You’ve got to hit a hot streak and give the fans a reason to come out,” Turner said. “We have to build up the excitement. If you build it, they will come, you know?”

But wins will be tough to come by in a rebuilding season. Just don’t call it a down year or a losing season, says Turner. Because there’s a difference.

According to Turner, the Sixers will have a successful season.

“I don’t think we’re going down,” Turner said. “I never woke up and thought I was going to be unsuccessful in my life. Pretty much, my teammates and I are going to go out and play every single game and play hard and take it from there.

“There’s different type of successes, in general, personal and team-wise. We’ve got to keep getting better. But I’m not going to sit here and be a loser. I’m not a loser. Period. Point blank. So I’m not going to sit there and dwell on it. Period.”

If the Sixers do not sign Turner to an extension by Oct. 31, he can be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.
