NBA Notes: Chris Paul elected union president

LAS VEGAS -- Los Angeles Clippers star Chris Paul was elected president of the NBA players' association Wednesday, replacing Derek Fisher.

The vote by NBA player representatives came six months after the union fired Billy Hunter as executive director. Hunter countered with a wrongful-termination lawsuit in May, accusing Fisher of conspiring with NBA officials during the 2011 lockout.

Paul was a vice president on the executive committee for the past four years.

In meetings at the Venetian Hotel, Roger Mason Jr. was elected first vice president. He replaced Jerry Stackhouse, who resigned from the office and is expected to take a position within the union.

Anthony Tolliver and Steve Blake were elected vice presidents, filling the executive committee positions vacated by Paul and Mason (see full story).

Timberwolves: Corey Brewer is back
MINNEAPOLIS -- When the Minnesota Timberwolves lost Andrei Kirilenko to Brooklyn, they found themselves in desperate need of a solid perimeter defender.

Corey Brewer says he's ready to fill that role. But he's also confident that he returns to Minnesota a much more accomplished player on the other end of the floor.

Brewer says he's worked hard to refine his offensive game. He turned into a big threat in transition while playing the last two seasons in Denver and has become proficient at shooting the corner 3-pointer.

Brewer says he's a "whole different player" from the one that never quite lived up to the hype as a No. 7 overall pick during his first stint with the Timberwolves.

He also says he's ready to be a leader on the young team (see full story).

Pistons: Harrellson inks two-year deal
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The Detroit Pistons signed center Josh Harrellson to two-year contract for the league minimum with the team holding an option for the second season Wednesday.

Harrellson played sparingly in six games last season for the Miami Heat.

The 6-foot-10, 275-pound Harrellson was drafted by New Orleans out of Kentucky in the second round in 2011, then traded that night to the New York Knicks. Harrellson averaged 4.4 points and 3.9 rebounds in 14.6 minutes as a rookie and played in four playoff games during the 2012 playoffs with the Knicks.

The Pistons traded for point guard Brandon Jennings during their busy offseason and signed free agents Josh Smith, Chauncey Billups, Luigi Datome and re-signed Will Bynum.

Celtics: McCarthy hired as assistant coach
BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics have filled out new coach Brad Stevens' staff.

The team says that former Celtics forward Walter McCarty will return as an assistant coach. Also joining the team are Ron Adams and Micah Shrewsberry. Jamie Young and Jay Larranaga had already been in position.

Adams spent the last three seasons as an assistant with the Chicago Bulls. Shrewsberry spent three seasons as an assistant at Purdue and worked with Stevens at Butler. McCarty worked for the Celtics as a community relations consultant last season. He had been a member of Jim O'Brien's coaching staff with the Indiana Pacers during the 2010-11 season and spent three seasons at Louisville as an assistant.

McCarty played 10 seasons in the NBA before he retired in 2006.
