NBA Notes: Nuggets fire George Karl

Sam Hinkie said he is staying busy since taking control of the Sixers' front office, but he would not open up about the franchise's head coaching search.

Meanwhile, the Sixers met with a pair of big men that should be on the board when they pick at No. 11 in this month's draft.

Now let's look at some other news from around the league.

Nuggets: George Karl out as head coach
DENVER -- The starless Denver Nuggets just lost their biggest name on the bench.

George Karl was ousted Thursday less than a month after winning the NBA's Coach of the Year award. His tenure with the Nuggets is over after 8 seasons.

The longtime coach is following general manager Masai Ujiri out the door in Denver after Ujiri, the league's executive of the year, recently left to become GM of the Toronto Raptors.

"So, we lost a GM now and a coach, what's next?" tweeted Nuggets big man Kenneth Faried.

Karl had just a year left on his contract, which may have played a role in this decision. Calls and emails to Karl's representatives were not returned Thursday.

But Karl did take to Twitter, posting on his certified account: "I want to thank Nuggets fans for their support over the past 8 yrs. The karma on the street was incredible. Denver will always be home."

There are quite a few teams currently on the lookout for a new coach. The Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers also have head coaching vacancies and the Memphis Grizzlies have given coach Lionel Hollins permission to speak with other teams (see full story).

Heat: Bosh seeks to shake slump
MIAMI -- Chris Bosh has been in a slump like this before.

Granted, it was during his first week in the NBA.

A decade later and trying to win another NBA championship, Bosh is searching for rhythm. He has not reached double-figures in scoring in Miami's last four games, a streak the Heat want to end when they open the NBA Finals on Thursday against the San Antonio Spurs.

Bosh has been in an all-out slump, missing 26 of his last 34 shots from the floor during the Eastern Conference finals against Indiana. He went five straight games without reaching double figures as a rookie. He hasn't gone that long since (see full story).

Pacers: Team expects to lose Shaw
INDIANAPOLIS -- Pacers coach Frank Vogel is already resigned to making one change next season: Finding a replacement for associate coach Brian Shaw.

Less than 48 hours after being ousted by Miami in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals, Vogel told reporters he'd like to keep as many faces around from this year's team as possible. He is virtually certain Shaw will get a head coaching job this summer.

"I'm not really sure how they try to replace him," Vogel said Wednesday. "But I do have the anticipation that we will have to replace him and if we don't, then there are some poor decisions being made out there because I believe he'll be one of the great coaches in this league."

Speculation is running rampant that Shaw could soon be hired as head coach of the Nets or Clippers. Shaw also has been rumored to be in the mix in Detroit and Philadelphia (see full story).

USA: National team to return to Las Vegas
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The U.S. national basketball team will return this summer to Las Vegas, where it trained before winning the last two Olympic gold medals.

The Americans will hold a minicamp for about 24 players from July 22-25, capped by an intrasquad exhibition game on July 25 at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center. The team says Wednesday the roster of players, to be announced later this month, will include "rising NBA stars" and "newly minted All-Stars."

Some of those players could join returning members from last year's Olympic champions next summer in the World Cup of Basketball in Spain, or in the 2016 Summer Games in Brazil.

The Americans have trained seven of the last eight summers in Las Vegas. Tickets for the game go on sale June 13 at www.UNLVtickets.com.
