The Sixers have until Monday to get their roster down to 15, however, coach Brett Brown said Wednesday night that there was a chance the cuts could come sooner in order to give the players a chance to catch on with other teams.

Vander Blue, Mac Koshwal, Royce White and Khalif Wyatt can go shopping for a new team on Thursday after the Sixers waived them, according to multiple league sources.

The moves leave the Sixers with 16 players, which means one more player has to be waived by Monday. The team can have three players on injured reserve and Jason Richardson, Nerlens Noel and Arnett Moultrie are definitely out as they recover from surgery. Meanwhile, veteran Kwame Brown has yet to practice this season because of a hamstring injury. In a merit-based system, Brown would be gone. But since Brown is in the last season of a guaranteed, $3 million deal, the Sixers might keep him around.

The Sixers have Evan Turner, Michael Carter-Williams, James Anderson, Tony Wroten, Darius Morris and Rodney Williams in the backcourt. Thad Young, Spencer Hawes, Lavoy Allen and Daniel Orton play up front.

Forwards Hollis Thompson and Gani Lawal appear to be fighting for the last spot.

The biggest surprise of Thursday’s cuts was Royce White, who at 6-foot-9 and 260 pounds, gave the team a versatile weapon off the bench. White was raw, but had the ability to rebound and push the ball up the floor. He also had a nice touch on passes inside, a rare skill for a big man.

However, White also was prone to foul trouble. Last Monday, he fouled out of a game against the Cavaliers at Ohio State and was ejected when he drew two technical fouls for arguing with the officials. White also suffered from a generalized anxiety disorder that could have left him a question mark for some games on the road.

The Sixers open the season next Wednesday at home against the two-time defending NBA champion Miami Heat.
