Photographer Tug Haines was on the scene of the parade Philadelphia held for the Taney Dragons on Wednesday. These are his photos and words.
There were a number of people complaining about this parade after it was announced. Some whined "how much money is this costing our fair, broke city?" Others mewled on about how they "didn't win anything." To first group of cheap, joyless skinflints: the cost was negligible. To the second group, they fell short of winning the Little League World Series, but only after they beat the rest of Pennsylvania and the entire Mid-Atlantic region, without any "proper" practice facility or field to call home. Their ace pitcher is a 12 year old girl who throws harder than most of us ever could and won more LLWS games and appeared on more SI covers than most of us as well. For two weeks the Taney Dragons made it safe for us to get excited about baseball again, and that alone makes it okay to show a little gratitude.
