Jonathan Papelbon? Still here. Marlon Byrd? Still here. Cliff Lee? Still here. Antonio Bastardo? Still here. Cole Hamels? Still here. Chase Utley or Jimmy Rollins? Still wearing a Phillies uniform.
The 4:00 pm non-waiver trade deadline came and went on Thursday afternoon and while there were plenty of huge trades across Major League Baseball, none of them involved Ruben Amaro Jr. or the Philadelphia Phillies.
Reports of Amaro asking too much may have turned out to be true.
Detroit opted for David Price over Cliff Lee or Cole Hamels. Oakland opted for Jon Lester. The Yankees opted to stand pat at the positions the Phillies were offering.
And Ryne Sandberg has the same roster to work with today as he did yesterday.
That could all change over the next month when Ruben Amaro could work something once all of the Phillies players he intends to trade pass through waivers. Given the contracts that Amaro bestowed upon them, passing waivers seems likely.
So, nothing to see here. Same old, same old. No rebuild. No retooling. Nada.
We'll leave you with this thought:
The deadline was not an indictment of Ruben Amaro’s inability to trade. Instead, another damning commentary on flawed roster he constructed.— Matt Gelb (@MattGelb) July 31, 2014
