Watch: Wild final out secures Cole Hamels' no-hitter over Cubs

Share

If he ends up getting traded this week, Cole Hamels provided Philadelphia Phillies fans a memory that will last a lifetime on Saturday afternoon at historic Wrigley Field when he no-hit the Chicago Cubs.

The final out was incredible theatre. Hamels made one of his worst pitches of the day with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to Cubs young slugger Kris Bryant who got good wood on it and sent it deep to center field towards the ivy. Odubel Herrera had some trouble tracking it down, stumbled, and... and... did he catch it?!?

Nobody seemed to know right away. Herrera seemed unsure for a split second, but the no-hitter was secured in amazing fashion.

The wind was blowing in the Phillies direction on this day.

Put this one in your memory bank right alongside Cole winning the World Series MVP back in 2008 and bringing that glorious championship parade down Broad Street.

The rumors have been swirling for months. Everybody who tuned in to Saturday's game against the Cubs knew that this could very legitimately be the last time Hamels suits up and pitches for the team he's spent his entire career to this point with. Will he end up getting traded this week? Only time will tell.

But man, what a way to go out if this turns out to be his final outing for the Phillies. It'll also make it a little tougher to see him go.

"Nothing will top winning a world series," Hamels said after the game. "This is probably on that top list. This is right under it."

"It's definitely one of the more special moments I've had."

Philly fans seemingly forgot what baseball goosebumps felt like. Thanks to Cole Hamels for reminding us one last time. He was legendary today.

“Right now I’m wearing Phillies red and that’s where I plan to play," Hamels said. "That’s all I can really do. It’s out of my control. I try to wake up every day and drive to CBP and play with the big ‘P’ on my chest. That’s what I’ve done since the moment I’ve been drafted by them. That’s what I’m going to continue to do until somebody says no."
