Draft Watch: TE Fleener finally impresses

Share

Stanford TE Coby Fleener did not participate on any of the on-the-field drills during the NFL Combine because of an ankle injury but got his chance to impress teams on Thursday during Stanford's pro day (from ProFootballTalk).

Fleener did not disappoint - running a 4.51 40 according to NFL Network's Mike Mayock, and a 4.45 on ESPN's Todd McShay's watch. Either way, they're incredible times for a guy Fleener's size (6-6, 247).

Fleener is my top-ranked TE, and the best pass catcher available at the position. He's not going to help you much in the run game at first, but he'll be a matchup problem immediately. This workout could help propel Fleener into the bottom-half of the first round, where teams are looking for the next Rob Gronkowski.

LSU CB Morris Claiborne, most likely the first DB selected come April, will have surgery on his wrist on Friday. Claiborne says he tore the ligament in his wrist during LSU's first meeting with Alabama in 2011. Don't expect Claiborne's stock to drop though. The fact that he continued playing, and at a high level, post-injury is a testament to how tough he is.

Claiborne (5-11, 188) ran a 4.50 40 at the combine, but at LSU's pro day on Thursday he ran a blistering 4.39. Expect to see Claiborne off the board sometime before the No. 6 pick (from NFL.com).

Fellow Tiger Rueben Randle also helped himself during LSU's pro day, posting 40 times of 4.43 and 4.42 after a best of 4.55 at the combine (from CBS Sports). Randle (6-3, 210) needs to show he's an explosive athlete after a very ordinary combine performance and underwhelming college career if he wants to crack the first round. Based on his college performance I wouldn't take him until the middle of the second round.
