If Spags comes, would Vikings want Castillo?

By this point, you've heard all the rumors and reports about Steve Spagnuolo coming back to Philly to be the Eagles' defensive coordinator (see story).

It hasn't happened yet (Andy Reid was on vacation this past week) but it still seems like it would make sense.

If it does happen, the Eagles will have another decision to make. They'll have to decide what to do with Juan Castillo. They could fire him or they just move him into another spot in the organization.

But 1500ESPN Twin Cities' Tom Pelissero offers another solution. Maybe the Eagles would let Castillo leave and join another team, perhaps the Vikings.

While the Vikings have also been pursuing Spagnuolo (who has quickly become the most eligible bachelor in the NFL), Pelissero suggests that if they lose out, Castillo might be on their wish list.

Castillo is still close to Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier, who was on the Eagles staff from 1999-2002.

"I have a strong affinity for Juan going back to our days spent together in Philadelphia," Frazier said to 1500ESPN in February. "I can remember Jim Johnson (the Eagles' longtime coordinator who passed away in July 2009) and our defensive staff putting our game plans together, and we'd always get together with Juan just to make sure they were sound in terms of pressures and blitzes.

"Sometimes, I felt like he was on our defensive staff. And to this day, he and I talk every week during the season to talk about other offenses in the league. That's how much respect I have for him as a coach and how well he is able to understand the defensive schemes."

The Eagles' defensive numbers were solid this season. The Birds finished eighth in the league in yardage and 10th in scoring. But ask most Eagles fans and they'll tell you that those stats are hollow, filled with blown leads and shaky schemes.

It seems the Eagles could make a case to keep Castillo as their defensive coordinator and cite the end of the season, where the Birds started to play better, as the reason.

It seems like a slightly more far-fetched scenario where another team would make Castillo their defensive coordinator. But who knows? Crazier things have happened, you know, like making Castillo the DC in the first place.
