NFL Network Spags ‘report' only speculation

Upon further review ... NFL Network is not reporting that Steve Spagnuolos return to the Eagles is a done deal.

NFL Networks Jason La Canfora appeared to report Tuesday morning that Spagnuolo, fired last week after three years as head coach of the Rams, was set to rejoin Andy Reids coaching staff, perhaps as defensive coordinator and perhaps in another role working alongside Juan Castillo.

Spagnuolo, let go by the St. Louis Rams last week, is expected to be back in Philadelphia by the end of the week, La Canfora wrote.

The wording in that report led several area news outlets to report that Spagnuolos greatly anticipated return to the Eagles had been finalized.

However, La Canfora said via e-mail Tuesday that when he wrote expected to be back in Philadelphia, he only meant Spagnuolo is expected to meet with Reid and the Eagles within the next week and no deal is in place.

Reid is on vacation and not expected back in town this week.

Spagnuolo, fired last week after his third season as head coach of the Rams, spent the 1999 through 2006 seasons on Reids staff, as a defensive assistant in 1999 and 2000, defensive backs coach from 2001 through 2003 and linebackers coach from 2004 through 2006.

He won a Super Bowl ring in 2007 in his first of two seasons as defensive coordinator of the Giants and then went 10-38 in three seasons as head coach of the Rams before getting fired.

Reid hasnt commented about Castillos future as defensive coordinator, and because Reid and Spagnuolo are so close, its been widely assumed that Spags would return to the Eagles once he was fired by the Rams.

Theres still a very good chance that happens. But it hasnt happened yet.
