Compensatory Picks: How valuable to Birds?

Share

The NFL did not grant the Eagles any compensatory picks for the upcoming draft for the first time since 2009. While the majority of these picks are 6th and 7th round selections, and cannot be traded, don't underestimate their value. Several Pro Bowl players have been former compensatory picks.

The most famous compensatory pick is of course Tom Brady -- selected by the Patriots in the 6th round of the 2000 draft (No. 199 overall). And no other team seems to take advantage of their extra picks better than Ozzie Newsome and the Baltimore Ravens:
Other Pro Bowl Compensatory Picks
Ovie Mughelli, FB, Baltimore - 4th round in 2003
David Tyree, WR, NY Giants - 6th round in 2003
Yeremiah Bell, S, Miami - 6th round in 2003
Scott Wells, C, Green Bay - 7th round in 2004
Derek Anderson, QB, Baltimore - 6th round in 2005
Antoine Bethea, S, Indianapolis - 6th round in 2006
Le'Ron McClain, FB, Baltimore - 4th round in 2007

During Andy Reid's tenure, the Eagles have received 19 compensatory picks:

2003
Jamaal Green, DE, Miami(FL) - 4th round131st overall
2004
J.R. Reed, S, South Florida - 4129
Trey Darilek, OL, UTEP - 4131
Bruce Perry, RB, Maryland - 7242
Dominic Furio, OL, UNLV - 7243

2005
Scott Young, OG, BYU - 5172
Calvin Armstrong, OT, Washington State - 6211
Keyonta Marshall, DT, Grand Valley State - 7247
David Bergeron, LB, Stanford - 7252

2006
Omar Gaither, LB, Tennessee - 5168
LaJuan Ramsey, DT, USC - 6204

2008
Jack Ikegwuonu, CB, Wisconsin - 4131
Joe Mays, LB, North Dakota State - 6200
Andy Studebaker, LB, Wheaton - 6203

2010

Kurt Coleman, S, Ohio State - 7244
2011
Greg Lloyd, Jr., LB, Connecticut - 7237
Stanley Havili, FB, USC - 7240

Understandably, late round picks rarely come up smelling like roses, but Reid has managed to find several players who have made contributions at the pro level -- Reed, Gaither, Mays, Studebaker, and Coleman. Unfortunately, the two best players on this list -- Mays (Broncos) and Studebaker (Chiefs) -- are making big contributions for other teams.
