Day 3 Senior Bowl: Denard turning heads

MOBILE, Ala.News and notes from Day 3 of Senior Bowl Week.

North Practice
Notes and a little bit of news from the North teams third practice of Senior Bowl Week:

A league source said former Redskins safeties coach Steve Jackson is expected in town by the end of the week and could be in line to reunite with Gregg Williams in St. Louis, but as cornerbacks coach. Williams coached Jackson in Houston and hired him in Buffalo and with the Redskins. Jackson was on the Redskins staff for eight years.

Also at the practice was fired Redskins receiver coach Keenan McCardell. He interviewed last week for the same position on the Jacksonville staff of new coach Mike Mularkey.

One talent evaluators take on the North team through three days: He likes Notre Dame safety Harrison Smith, Boise State running back Doug Martin, Nebraska linebacker Lavonte Davis and especially Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Denard. You see him one-on-one? The receivers didnt want anything to do with him, he said.

A source upon being told that expected-to-be-ex-Redskins safety LaRon Landry decided not to have Achilles tendon surgery. Does he want to stay hurt? the source said. No accountability. Hes gone.

The special teams could be interesting on Saturday, especially blocking on returns. The North team underwent heavy instruction because there were linemen on the field who probably didnt play that role in college.

Rotating on kick returns were T.J. Graham (N.C. State), Asa Jackson (Cal Poly) and Devier Posey (Ohio State) and Martin.

South Practice
Recapping the third day of practice for the Senior Bowls South team, which is being coached by the Redskins staff:

Before full-scale team drills, the offensive and defensive lines worked on combo blocks and at midfield, there was more running back blitz pick up, which got Redskins assistant Bobby Turner fired up. This much is clear, though: Texas linebacker Emmanuel Acho is no match for this group of backs. He handily beat Terrance Ganaway (Baylor) and Alfred Morris (Florida Atlantic).

In the stands for the workout was current Raiders and former Redskins offensive coordinator Al Saunders. He just completed his first year with Oakland, but departed head coach Hue Jackson called the plays.

Quarterback Ryan Lindley (San Diego State) and his struggles with catching a snap continued Wednesday. He dropped one exchange even though it was run-play drill and later during 11-vs.-11, he stepped away from center too early.

Cornerback Brandon Boykin (Georgia) continues to impress. Hes not the biggest guy (5-foot-9 14, 183 pounds) but on one play, he chucked receiver Dwight Jones (North Carolina), who had a six-inch height advantage and weighed 43 more pounds. Boykin was off balance for a second, but he recovered and undercut the route to break up the pass.

Receiver Juron Criner (Arizona) ran a nice corner route and made a leaping catch over DeQuan Menzie (Alabama).

Although hes listed as being from small-school North Alabama, cornerback Janoris Jenkins played three years at Florida and he continues to show why he had a first-round grade last year. He showed great recovery speed after Jones got a few steps on him.
