Eagles' offense on pace for historic inefficiency

Share

For some strange reason, it doesnt seem like were watching one of the greatest offenses in NFL history.

Cant imagine why.

The stats say the Eagles are unstoppable. The scoreboard says they're very stoppable.

Read on. You wont believe the numbers.

Through 11 games, the Eagles have gained 4,621 yards of offense, which puts them on pace for 6,721 this year.

That would be more than every Super Bowl winner in NFL history.

Only four teams in NFL history have had more yards in a season: The 2000 Rams (7,075), 1984 Dolphins (6,936), 1998 49ers (6,744) and 1981 Chargers (6,744).

All four of those teams made the playoffs and all were quarterbacked by Hall of Famers (Dan Marino, Steve Young, Dan Fouts) or a likely Hall of Famer (Kurt Warner).

All four of those teams also scored at least 478 points. The Eagles are on pace for 373 points.

So the lowest-scoring team to ever average 420 yards per game was the 1981 Chargers, who scored 29.9 per game. The Eagles are averaging 22 percent fewer points per game than the previous worst team that moved the ball the way they do.

No NFL team has ever averaged 400 yards per game and scored under 25 points per game. The Eagles are at 420 yards per game and averaging 23.4 points per game.

The Saints (437 yards per game) and Patriots (430 per game) are ahead of the Eagles pace this year, so if nothing changes, this years Eagles team will record the seventh-most yards in NFL history and fail to reach the playoffs, fail to record a winning record, and fail to finish among the top 12 scoring offenses in the NFL.

What does it all mean?

The 2011 Eagles have the most inefficient offense in NFL history.

Despite churning out yards at a near-record pace, theyre in the middle of the pack in the league in scoring -- currently 14th.

The Eagles this year have had games with 513, 489, 466 and 447 yards -- and lost all four, to the 49ers, Bills, Patriots and Falcons.

No other team in NFL history has recorded four games in the same season with 440 or more yards and lost all four.

We have more. We always have more.

The Eagles have had six games this year in which theyve netted 375 or more yards but scored 24 or fewer points. Talk about offensive inefficiency.

Take a look:

Sept. 25 ... Giants (29-16 loss), 376 yards
Oct. 2 ... 49ers (24-23 loss), 513 yards
Oct. 9 ... Bills (31-24 loss), 489 yards
Oct. 16 ... Redskins (20-13 win), 422 yards
Nov. 20 ... Giants (17-10 win), 391 yards
Nov. 27 ... Patriots (38-20 loss), 466 yards

No team in NFL history has ever had more such games in a season, with at least 375 yards of offense and 24 or fewer points on the scoreboard.

Focusing even further on three of those losses -- the 49ers, Bills and Patriots -- the Eagles are the only team in NFL history with three games in one season in which theyve gained 450 or more yards and scored 24 or fewer points.

The Eagles fell to 4-7 Sunday with a 38-20 loss to the Patriots at the Linc. That was their third loss this year when theyve had 450 yards, and that is another NFL record. Theyre the third team in history with three losses in the same season in which they netted at least 450 yards.

The Eagles finish the season with a game against the Seahawks in Seattle Thursday night, then at Miami, Jets home, at Dallas and Redskins home.

Obviously, turnovers and red-zone efficiency are the two biggest reasons the Eagles have been moving the ball so much without scoring points or winning.

The Eagles are tied with the Redskins for the NFL lead with 25 turnovers (18 interceptions, seven fumbles), the most theyve had after 11 games since 1999 (29).

Theyve scored touchdowns on 22 of 49 red-zone drives for 45 percent, which ranks 24th in the NFL.
