Ray's Replies: Will Eagles target Fletcher?

Q. Do you think the Eagles will make a play for London Fletcher? He is a free agent and I know he is 37 and it goes away from Andy Reids youth philosophy, but he didnt abide by the 30 rule by signing Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins. Do you think (Washington coach) Mike Shanahan will make (keeping) Fletcher a top priority?

A. Actually, Fletcher will be 37 in May. I know it sounds crazy but, yes, I would have an interest in him. He is coming off another good season (his 14th in the NFL), good enough to earn a Pro Bowl invitation, replacing the injured Brian Urlacher.

A lot depends on what the Eagles do with their overall defense. If they hire a new coach to oversee the defense that coach would have to determine whether Fletcher is a good fit for his scheme. His size5-10, 245 poundsis always a concern and thats why he was undrafted out of college, but it has not stopped him from becoming one of the most productive defensive players in the NFL.

Fletcher led the league in tackles this season and he is so smart and instinctive, he could play in any system. He is incredibly durable. He has not missed a game due to injury in his entire career. There is no question the Eagles have to upgrade their personnel at linebacker and Fletcher, with his experience and leadership, would be a nice addition.
