Rob Ryan can't back up smack talk

Rob Ryan promised an ass-whoopin and thats exactly what he got.

Ryan, the Cowboys brash defensive coordinator, talked plenty of trash about the Eagles during the summer and again this past week, leading up to Sundays nationally televised Eagles-Cowboys game, but after giving up 34 points to the Eagles Sunday, Ryan wasnt bragging anymore.

Plain and simple, I got out-coached tonight by Andy Reid and some of his staff tonight, Ryan said. I never gave our guys a chance and the whole thing is on me. Our defensive staff did a great job and I just had a bad game plan. I just called a terrible game.

Ryans father, Buddy Ryan, did plenty of bragging in this city in his day, but he couldnt back it up. The Eagles went 0-3 in his three playoff games, scoring just one touchdown in those three games.

On Sunday night, the younger Ryan couldnt back it up, either. The Eagles beat the Cowboys 34-7 on national TV (see story).

During training camp, while the Eagles were signing a bunch of Pro Bowl free agents, Rob Ryan took a shot at the Eagles, saying: I dont know if we win the all-hype team. I think that might have gone to somebody else, but were going to beat their ass when we play them.

He repeated the sentiment during the week.

Sunday night?

The Eagles gained 495 yards against the Cowboys, the most theyve ever had against Dallas, and ran for 239 yards.

I could have called a way better game, Ryan said. It was just a lousy plan anyway you call it. I got out-coached and out everything plain and simply and not happy about it.

It was a little embarrassing tonight because we did not have guys in the right gaps on coverages. Spin it anyway you want, but we got beat bad tonight.

Thats the Ryan way.

Talk big. Then fail to back it up.

It is not the first time that I have run my mouth and paid for it, he said. Just part of the game. I do not say anything that I do not truly believe. Hopefully it will be the last time it ever happens, but who knows.

We just got beat tonight. Whatever happened in this game it was my fault.
