Briere's dazzling SO goal almost didn't count

So Danny Briere scored a goal in the shootout, but it almost didnt count.

Not that it would have mattered because the Flyers still lost the game, 4-3, to the Devils. (See story.)
What does matter is that Briere had a stop-and-go move at the net but the puck kept moving on his sticka requirement under the rules. So long as the puck does not come to a complete stop, its a good goal.

Goalie Johan Hedberg made a sudden move, Briere stumbled for an instant, then after Hedberg went down, skated around him and scored.

The goal went to review and the call on the ice was upheld.

Yeah, he kind of surprised me with the poke check and I almost fell, Briere said.

I wanted to keep moving forward, but he kind of surprised me and I stumbled and almost stopped completely. I know the rule. Youre not allowed to go backwards and youre not allowed to stop completely. To be honest, I wasnt trying to stop completely. I just got surprised and stumbled a little bit.

Briere is now 11 for 26 in shootouts. Claude Giroux is 6 for 17 and Wayne Simmonds is 2 for 6. They were the three shooters.

The Flyers are 22-42 all-time as a team.

Penalty shots
Elias says the Flyers are now 18 for 42 all-time on penalty shots during the regular season. They are 2 for 8 in the playoffs.

Shots
New Jerseys 21 shots in the second period were the third-most they have ever had in a single period against the Flyers. They had 23 in the second period of a game on Feb. 7, 1987 and 22 in the third period of a game on Oct. 8, 1997.
