OK, so he let some pucks past him this week, but Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov turned in another seven days worth of impressive performances and has been named the NHL's First Star of the Week for the second time in a row.
In four starts last week, Bryzgalov allowed just six goals. He kicked off the week Tuesday in Newark, N.J., by holding the New Jersey Devils scoreless, and helped the Flyers win, 3-2, against the New York Islanders on Thursday.
During that Islanders game, Bryzgalov set a new shutout-streak record for the Flyers by going 2:49:43 without giving up a goal. His streak dethroned previous record-holder John Vanbiesbrouck, who held opponents scoreless for 2:27:40 in 1999.
Bryzgalov made 31 saves Saturday against the Boston Bruins and 38 saves Sunday against Pittsburgh, a big reason why the Flyers escaped a tough weekend with three points, even though they were down 2-0 at times during both games.
Since March 1, Bryzgalov is 8-0-1 with a 1.20 goals-against average and four shutouts. In that time, the Flyers haven't lost on home ice -- a marked improvement over their struggles in Philadelphia that defined a large part of the first half of the season.
Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford was named the second star, and Nashville Predators forward Martin Erat earned third-star honors.
