Giroux attempted to rally Flyers with fight

Share

The last time Claude Giroux dropped the gloves with someone was nearly one year ago to the dayJan. 20, 2011 against Ottawas Nick Foligno.

Giroux tried to rally the Flyers out of their doldrums in the second period, trailing 2-0 to the Isles on Thursday night, by throwing down with defenseman Dylan Reese.

Ironically, Reese replaced Steve Staios in this game. You remember Staios. Hes the Islander who cheap-shotted Max Talbot last week on the Island.

We got into a couple of slashes and hooks, me and him, pretty much the whole game, Giroux said of Reese. It had to be done.

It was just Girouxs third career NHL fight.

I really didnt think anything of it, said goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, when asked for a reaction. Good for him.

What did Danny Bruiser Briere, think of the teams leading scorer (50 points) getting into a fight?

You dont want to see that happening too often, Briere said. But at the same time, hes showing that hes got some fire in him and thats gonna happen once in a while.

I was hoping that was the boost we needed to get us going but we just werent able to finish on our chances.

His secret
Jaromir Jagr, who went public earlier in the day that he wants to re-sign a one-year contract (see story), says his secret to longevity was never drinking alcohol of any kind.

He never had it in his house growing up in the Czech Republic. Not even the famed Czech vodka. All he ever drinks isDiet Coke.

Most of the Flyers' water bottles on the bench are filled with either sports drinks or water. Not Jagrs.

Mine has Diet Coke in it, he laughed.

Loose pucks
This was the Isles' first win in Philadelphia since April 7, 2007, when they skated away with a 4-2 victory. ... The Flyers are 3-3 this season when getting 40 or more shots and are 8-8-1 over the last two seasons when doing so. More shots seems to equal more losses than wins.Giroux was 13 for 19 (68 percent) on faceoffs, while rookie Sean Couturier was 6 for 7 (86 percent). With an assist, Couturier stretched his overall point-scoring streak to six games but saw his goal-scoring streak snapped at five games. ...Rookie Harry Zolnierczyk tied for the team lead in hits (four) in just 5:01 of ice time. Talbot also had four hits.
