James van Riemsdyk will undergo surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot on March 6 and is expected to miss four to six weeks, according to Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren.

Van Riemsdyk suffered the broken foot in the first period of the Flyers 6-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday, while blocking a shot from the point by Islanders defenseman Milan Jurcina (see story).

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steven Raikin will put a plate in van Riemsdyks foot during surgery to help with the healing process, Holmgren said.

The timetable for return means van Riemsdyk will most likely miss the rest of the regular season. Hes already missed substantial time this year because of injury, most recently having missed more than a month because of a concussion.

The Islanders game was just van Riemsdyks sixth game back since returning from the concussion. In 43 games this season, he has 11 goals and 13 assists.
