Will injured Schenn make Flyers roster?

Share

The strange case of Brayden Schenn took a bit of an unusual twistagainon Sunday at Flyers practice.

Schenn, who has been rehabbing a left shoulder injury, began practice with other injured players at a separate end of the ice and eventually joined the full squad.

Hes hasnt been able to do that in a while.

I feel good, Schenn said afterward, one of the first interviews hes given since being injured more than a week ago.
He took a number of shots by himself under the watchful eye of the assistant coaches on Sunday before joining group drills.

Apparently, the 20-year-old has not been cleared for full contact because Schenn himself seemed confused whether he was able to take hits since he hasnt been tested, which is protocol.

Additionally, injured players wear the white Red Cross jersey, but Schenn wore a usual practice jersey.

The first thing I have to worry about is the maintenance, he said of his rehab. It feels pretty normal. Ill be healthy coming up here, soon.

The operative words there are coming up here soon. That could be Thursday when the Flyers play in Boston.

Or maybe not.

Given the Flyers salary cap issues going into the season, its entirely possible Schenn is sent to the Phantoms as an injured player on Wednesday, then joins the team soon after when the club can readjust the roster with LTI (long-term injury) players, etc.

I feel ready, but at the same time, they make the calls, Schenn said.

Coach Peter Laviolette and general manager Paul Holmgren have both stated they would have liked to see Schenn play more games. He played in four of the seven exhibitions.

Schenn was the centerpiece of the Mike Richards trade to Los Angeles the day before the NHL Draft last June.

Sources continue to say that 18-year-old rookie Sean Couturier and 25-year-old Matt Read are both on the roster.

But is Schenn?
