Ten names to ponder as Phils seek outfield depth

Share

The addition of Ty Wigginton gives the Phillies the depth they have been seeking at the corner infield spots.

They are still looking for depth in leftfield.

Here are 10 players to consider:

1. Michael Cuddyer
Hes a guy that the Phils set their sights on from the start of the free-agent season. He can play corner infield and corner outfield. Some folks took the Wigginton trade as a sign that the Phils were ending their pursuit of Cuddyer, but that doesnt appear to be the case. It is believed that the Phils have made an offer to Cuddyer. Its probably shorter in term and dollars than hes looking for, but if he wants it, the door is open.

2. Jason Kubel
Cuddyers former teammate in Minnesota bats from the left side, which would make him an interesting possible platoon fit with John Mayberry Jr. Sources say the Phillies are interested in Kubel, who is a free agent. He could be a good fit.

3. Johnny Damon
The free agent bats left-handed and has a winning pedigree. The Phillies made a bid to trade for him in August, so hes worth mentioning.

4. Raul Ibanez
The door is not closed on a possible return, but the Phils seem to have prioritized other targets.

5. Josh Willingham
He was a rumoredemphasis on rumoredPhillies target last summer. The free agent appears to be angling for a three-year deal. Its difficult to envision the Phillies doing that.
6. Laynce Nix
The left-handed-hitting free agent had 16 homers for Washington in 2011. He can also play some first base, which might make him attractive.

7. Aaron Rowand
Several people in the Phillies organization believe the club could benefit from his hard-nosed attitude. Some also believe Citizens Bank Park could revitalize his bat. There has been long-standing interest in bringing him back to Philadelphia. Might this be the time?

8. David DeJesus
Left-handed hitting free agent could be worth a look after a down year in Oakland.

9. Jonny Gomes
The Phils are probably looking for more contact at the plate.

10. Hideki Matsui
Hes 37 and mostly a DH at this point, so hes an unlikely fit. But anyone with the nickname Godzilla is always worth mentioning.
