That's a lot of money: Look at Pujols' deal

Have you ever wondered what it's like to sign a contract like the one Albert Pujols agreed to on Thursday? NBC's Darren Rovell broke down the numbers to put it all in perspective. The Angels agreed to a deal with the the former St. Louis Cardinal for 10 years worth at least 250 million (see blog post).

During the season, which covers 183 days, Pujols will make 136,612 per day. Each day for the next 10 years he will earn 68,493. That is more than the average six-person household in California, which makes 63,125 a YEAR. The @SportsTaxMan tweeted that Pujols bi-weekly paycheck will be worth 2.049 million. That's every 15 days.

How can the Angels afford such a lucrative contract? Merchandising and TV revenues. Just like the Phillies, the Cards' official team store is a bustling business, but 40 percent of the gear sold was Pujols memorabilia. All that merchandise now heads west with a different logo on it. The Angels' current television deal generates 50 million annually. The speculation is that now, the team can demand as much as 150 million per year.

Knowing all these numbers it looks like the Phillies did a pretty good job signing Ryan Howard when they did. Howard signed a five-year 125 million extension in April of 2010, that is half of the guaranteed dollars Pujols got. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has done a good job spreading out the huge sums of money available at his disposal.

Now, it appears the Phillies and Jimmy Rollins are getting closer to a deal. Just like the Angels and Pujols, the Phillies can afford to pay a 33-year-old shortstop 12 million a year for three or four years because of the incredible fan support the ball club receives. The Phillies were No. 1 in Baseball in 2011 in attendance, drawing 3,680,718 fans to Citizens Bank Park. The Angels were fifth but there is plenty of room to grow. In Anaheim they were at 86.1 percent capacity per game. Fill those extra seats and the Pujols deal becomes much more manageable.

The Phillies have worked the formula well but there is plenty of competition. The Angels and Marlins joined the fray this year with their free spending. How much can all these team spend? The next big move for the Phillies is their television contract -- which expires in 2015 with Comcast Sportsnet. It's nice to be one of the big boys -- let's just hope it leads to another parade down Broad Street.
