Iverson offered contract to play … soccer?

Ever played the "what would this athlete have been like in a different sport" game?

Really, with his speed, stamina and will power, it's not unthinkable that Allen Iverson could have made one heck of soccer player. Sure he played football in high school, but what if he had gravitated toward futbol instead?

Well now, at the age of 36, Iverson -- an 11-time NBA All-Star and the 2001 league MVP -- has been offered one last opportunity to show us we can do on the pitch.

Perhaps in response to stories from earlier this week that Iverson owes over 800,000
to a Georgia jeweler and would spend time in the D-League if it meant an eventual return to the NBA, the Rochester Lancers of the Major Indoor Soccer League have offered Iverson a surprisingly lucrative contract to join their team.

The team's official press release (via EOB):

The Rochester Lancers, of the MISLs top level of pro indoor soccer, today announced a contract offer to former NBA star, Allen Iverson. The Rochester Lancers host two remaining regular season home games to conclude their season. The offer stands at 20,000 per game, with a bonus of 5,000 per goal scored, win bonuses, and merchandise bonuses. There are over 12 goals scored on average per game."Allen Iverson is one of the premier athletes of our time," said Rich Randall, Vice President of the Rochester Lancers. "With his athleticism and competitive hunger, I think he can be a great fit with our team and fans as we make an important playoff push, while also driving interest to an exciting, growing sport."

For just two games, playing indoor soccer for more than 40,000 seems like a pretty good deal.

What say you, Mr. Iverson?
