The Eagles were awarded one-time Super Bowl starter Kyle DeVan, a fourth-year interior lineman, on waivers from the Colts Saturday.
DeVan, 6-foot-2, 295 pounds, started nine regular-season games and the entire postseason up through the Super Bowl for the Colts in 2009 at right guard under current Eagles offensive line coach Howard Mudd. The Colts lost to the Saints 35-17 in Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.
DeVan, undrafted out of Oregon State, had brief stints with the Redskins and Jets in 2008 before signing with the Colts in 2009. DeVan has also had stints recently with the Boise Burn of Arena2 and substitute teaching in California.
By claiming DeVan, the Eagles pick up his Colts contract, which pays him 525,000 this year with no bonus money. Hes scheduled to be an exclusive rights free agent after the season.
In DeVan, the Eagles get another insurance policy in the event that rookie first-round pick Danny Watkins is unable to hold onto the job.
To make room on the 53-man roster for DeVan, the Eagles released undrafted rookie defensive tackle Cedric Thornton, who is a candidate for the practice squad if he clears waivers.
The Eagles also added five players to their eight-man practice squad, including rookies Greg Lloyd and Stanley Havili, the Eagles only 2011 draft picks who didnt survive Saturdays final roster cuts.
Lloyd, a linebacker from U. Conn, and Havili, a fullback from USC, were both seventh-round picks.
The Eagles also re-signed 2010 third-round pick Daniel Teo-Nesheim to the practice squad a day after releasing him. Teo-Nesheim played in seven games last year with five tackles and one sack.
The Eagles also added wide receiver Chad Hall and offensive lineman Dallas Reynolds to the practice squad.
Hall was on the game-day 45-man active roster for eight regular-season games and one playoff game last year. To be eligible for the practice squad, a player must have been on the game-day roster for fewer than nine regular-season games. So had he been up for just one more game, the Eagles would not have been permitted to sign him to the practice squad.
Hall last year caught 11 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in the season finale against the Cowboys, when he caught six passes for 84 yards. Hall also had nine rushes for 29 yards and averaged 16.3 yards on four kick returns as a rookie in 2010.
Reynolds has been with the Eagles since they signed him as an undrafted rookie out of BYU in 2009. He spent most of 2009 and all of last year on the practice squad. He was on the active roster for two weeks late in 2009 but didnt get into a game.
Also Saturday, Mike McGlynn, who started 15 games at center for the Eagles but was waived on Friday, was awarded to the Bengals on a waiver claim. Because the Bengals claimed McGlynns contract, McGlynn will earn the 1 million hes due on the final year of his four-year Eagles contract.
