Early Eagles roster projection: Offense

Share

Its ridiculously early but its never too early for a 53-man roster right? Right? Well, heres the first go at it. Remember, its really early but today well look at the offense. Wednesday, well take a look at the defense and special teams.

This roster is based on what Ive seen during OTAs and minicamp. Obviously, plenty can change during training camp:

WR: Jeremy Maclin, Riley Cooper, Marvin McNutt
LT: Demetress Bell, King Dunlap
LG: Evan Mathis, Brandon Washington
C: Jason Kelce
RG: Danny Watkins, Julian Vandervelde
RT: Todd Herremans, Dennis Kelly
TE: Brent Celek, Clay Harbor
WR: DeSean Jackson, Jason Avant
FB: Stanley Havili
RB: LeSean McCoy, Dion Lewis, Bryce Brown
QB: Michael Vick, Mike Kafka, Nick Foles

Well look at the roster by position:

Offensive line

Heres what we know for sure: Todd Herremans is at right tackle. Danny Watkins is at right guard. Jason Kelce is at center and Evan Mathis is at left guard.

The team lost Jason Peters, who ruptured his Achilles. It looks like free agent pickup Demetress Bell will likely be the guy in his spot but King Dunlap wants to win the job. Either way, Dunlap is on the team.

Julian Vandervelde, last years fifth-rounder, was on the roster all of last season, so hell probably be a backup at guard. Dennis Kelly was a fifth-rounder this season and the 6-8 tackle will probably be the man there. The last offensive line spot should go to sixth-round pick Brandon Washington. Washington was a steal in the sixth and might have a future in the league.

The odd men out on the O-line are Mike Gibson, Steve Vallos and D.J. Jones. Look for a couple of these guys to hang out on the practice squad.

Running back

All Pro LeSean McCoy. Enough said there.

Then, 5-8 Dion Lewis will be the backup. Lewis was the third back last year behind Ronnie Brown. He had 23 carries all season. McCoy had more than 23 carries four times last season. But Lewis has potential and showed a little bit in his rookie season.

The next guy on the depth chart is Bryce Brown. He wears the same No. 34 as Ronnie Brown did last season. Bryce Brown is a 6-0, 223 pound seventh-rounder out of Kansas State. He hasnt really played in the past two years because of transferring but the Eagles liked him enough to use a draft pick on him.

The odd man out is rookie free agent Chris Polk. Polk might have an impressive training camp and squeeze by Brown, but we havent seen enough yet. Polk is 5-11, 222, but is a powerful runner. Once the guys get pads on, he might turn some heads.

Fullback

Stanley Havili was a seventh-rounder in 2011 and with the departure of Owen Schmitt, hes the guy. Emil Igwenagu and Jeremy Stewart are also on the 90-man roster but will probably be behind Havili. The Eagles dont use the full back position all that much, not since Leonard Weaver was here. Its possible they dont have a full back on the roster, but I cant see that happening.

Tight end

Brent Celek is the starter. After thats when it gets interesting.

Clay Harbor caught 13 passes for 163 yards last season but hes needed to block more than catch. Thats why I think hell make this team. Harbor worked hard last off-season to bulk up and become a better blocker and now it might save his job. He had a tough time catching the ball during OTAs and Brett Brackett didnt.

The Penn State product caught just about everything thrown his way and he got plenty thrown his way. This wasnt supposed to be a position battle but it has turned into one.

Wide receiver

The top here is pretty simple. DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are the starters outside and Jason Avant is a solid guy in the slot.

Then, it gets a little more interesting. Riley Cooper showed some potential last season but made mistakes too. Hes not a definite but I think chances are pretty good for him.

The last wideout spot is more interesting. Right now, I have Marvin McNutt penciled in. The Eagles used a sixth-round pick to take the 6-2 receiver. McNutt looked slow during OTAs and minicamp and that was without pads. He better watch out for rookie free agent Damaris Johnson. Johnson is only 5-8 but got a ton of passes thrown his way in May and June. And more importantly, he caught them. If he has a good camp, he might edge out McNutt.

Chad Hall has a chance too. The Eagles like him a lot but hes not a guy who would get a ton of playing time. It might be time for the Eagles to cut him and let him go somewhere to get more chances to play.

Quarterback

Mike Vicks the starter.

Mike Kafka has looked pretty good so far. He has looked stronger this off-season and seems capable of making all the necessary throws. He has a little more experience; he looks like the No. 2 guy.

Nick Foles has been quietly impressive. He might be a guy fans start to like during training camp. He has a nice arm and makes the throws look effortless.

The guy on the outside here is veteran Trent Edwards. The Eagles will bring four QBs to camp, and why not? There are 90 roster spots this off-season. But Edwards would need to get a whole lot better during camp than he has been in May and June. He was clearly the fourth-best quarterback during OTAs.
