Round 3: Eagles draft QB Nick Foles

Share

After focusing on defense with their first three picks in the draft, the Eagles selected Arizona quarterback Nick Foles (see bio) with their third-round pick, No. 88 overall.

Foles threw for 362 yards per game this past year as a senior, third-most in NCAA Division 1 behind Case Keenum of Houston and Brandon Weeden of Oklahoma State.

The 6-foot-5 Foles is a pure pocket passer with little scrambling ability. Hes got a big arm, but hes also smart, accurate and can make quick decisions, which make him a good fit for the Eagles West Coast Offense.

Foles was a three-year starter at Arizona and threw 67 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. He passed for a school-record 10,011 yards, including 4,334 as a senior, when he completed 69 percent of his passes.

Foles was the sixth quarterback taken, and hes the sixth quarterback Andy Reid has taken, following Donovan McNabb in 1999, fifth-round pick A.J. Feeley in 2001, sixth-round selection Andy Hall in 2004, second-round pick Kevin Kolb in 2007 and fourth-round choice Mike Kafka in 2010.

He joins starter Michael Vick, backup Kafka and off-season pickup Trent Edwards as the fourth quarterback currently on the roster.

Foles is the first player from the University of Arizona the Eagles have drafted since middle linebacker Byron Evans in 1987.

Foles is also the first Arizona quarterback drafted since Eddie Wilson in the 10th round in 1985. It's the highest an Arizona QB has been drafted since the Lions drafted Eddie Wilson in the second round in 1962.
