Eagles defensive end Trent Cole underwent wrist surgery this week and could miss some of spring camps, league sources have confirmed to CSNPhilly.com.

Cole’s procedure was minor and he should be fully recovered by training camp. Cole, a two-time Pro Bowl defensive end, had just three sacks last year.

The Eagles haven’t released any information about Cole’s surgery. USA Today first reported the news.

This year’s spring camps will be important given the team’s expected defensive scheme switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 under new coach Chip Kelly. Cole, a fifth-round pick in 2005, is likely headed for a position switch to rush outside linebacker.

Last offseason, Cole had his contract extended six years for close to $60 million, and he is signed through 2017.

Cole, 30, had the fewest sacks of his eight-year career in 2012 after recording 11 in just 14 games in 2011. He had racked up double-digit sacks in three straight years from 2009-2011 and only has four seasons of single-digit sacks.  He ranks third on the franchise all-time sack list with 71, five behind Clyde Simmons.
