PITTSBURGH, Pa. Game-day good news for the Flyers came in the form of an announcement from general manager Paul Holmgren Wednesday afternoon in the Steel City.
Both Danny Briere and Nicklas Grossmann will be in the lineup tonight for Game 1 of the Flyers Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against the Penguins, Holmgren confirmed.
Grossmann, who sustained a knee injury in the Flyers April 1 win over the Penguins in Pittsburgh, was elevated to day-to-day status last week and seemed a lock to return tonight. Briere, however, was the bigger question mark. Both players had been practicing, but the Flyers had yet to say whether theyd be in the lineup officially.
Briere has had a rather disappointing season, but he did have nine points in the five games before he was injured, also on April 1. Hes also a proven playoff performer, and his return should give the Flyers an offensive boost.
When Danny returns to the lineup for us, hes a difference maker, coach Peter Laviolette said. I think his career path, not only in the regular season but especially in the playoffs, he shows what an effective player he can be. The bigger the circumstances, the bigger the performance. Since Ive been here, thats been my take on Danny. Give him something to thrive in, and he thrives.
