Who said the captain was hurt after that hit Saturday night in Arizona?
You would have never even fathomed it by seeing him on the Wells Fargo Center ice Monday night, especially after he saved the Flyers in overtime against a lowly opponent.
Claude Giroux beat Winnipeg goalie Ondrej Pavelec with 13.6 seconds left in overtime to give the Flyers a huge 3-2 victory over the Jets.
He found a loose puck from Shayne Gostisbehere all alone in front and wristed the winner past Pavelec. That came after the Flyers blew a 2-0 lead.
Giroux was all over the ice all night and finished with a goal, an assist and a five shots on net.
Mark Streit and Wayne Simmonds also scored for the Flyers, who earned two massive points to stay steady in the wild-card chase in the Eastern Conference.
Notable goals
Streit opened the scoring 41 seconds into the second period when he slid in from the point, took a beautiful cross-seam pass from Sean Couturier and beat Pavelec for his sixth tally of the season.
Simmonds found a loose puck in the high slot and wristed it off Winnipeg defenseman Dustin Byfuglien and past Pavelec for his 26th of the season.
Winnipeg got on the board when Mark Scheifele picked off a Jake Voracek pass and beat Steve Mason clean on a breakaway. That cut to the Flyers’ lead to 2-1.
The Jets tied things up early in the third when Scheifele found Blake Wheeler cutting to the net and Wheeler beat Mason upstairs on the backhand. Mason didn’t have much of a chance.
And, of course, Giroux’s game-winner, which tied him with Reggie Leach for 12th all time on the career scoring list with 514 points.
Power play
Another game, another lackluster showing for the Flyers’ power play. They had two chances and didn’t get much going on either of them, with just three shots combined. Sam Gagner did deflect a slapper from the point off the crossbar during the second man advantage, though.
The power play is now mired in a 2-for-21 slump over the last six games. The first power-play unit, which is stacked with offensive talent, hasn’t cashed in since March 7.
Penalty kill
Penalty kill? What penalty kill?
The Flyers’ penalty-killing unit didn’t see the ice because the Flyers didn’t give the Jets a power play the entire game.
The Flyers’ only penalty came when Brandon Manning and Winnipeg’s Ben Chiarot took coincidental minors for roughing late in the third period.
It was first time they didn't faced a shorthanded situation in a game since March 4, 2012.
Goalie report
Making his sixth straight start and 11th in the last 12 games, Mason again played well with 26 saves.
Pavelec kept the Jets in the game early when the Flyers came out on fire with a 7-0 shots advantage in the first 9:40 of the contest. He had 29 stops.
Mason was particularly good in the second period when the Jets made a push with 11 shots on goal. His only blemish in the period was Scheifele’s breakaway marker.
Wishing the ‘Cats well
During the first television timeout, the Flyers played a video that congratulated Villanova’s basketball team on making the Final Four and wished the Wildcats well this coming weekend in Houston.
The video drew loud cheers from the orange-clad faithful.
