This is Teemu Selannes 20th, and quite possibly, last NHL season. Hes 42 and still skating with those Anaheim Ducks.
Selanne has already passed the legendary Jari Kurri as the highest-scoring Finn in NHL history with 1,406 points.
Did we mention that he played all 82 games last season, the oldest NHLer to ever do that?
Age is a funny thing, Selanne said. A lot of times, I dont really feel 42 right now. It all depends how good you feel, how healthy you are and how much passion you have for the game.
That is why I still enjoy the game. Its fun to go to the rink every morning. It sounds pretty old when you say 42 as a hockey player. Mentally, I am still the same level as Ryan Getzlaf and those other guys. That is most important and that is why I am still in the game.
Will Stars' moves pay off?
Will it be enough?
Thats what people in Dallas want to know about all the moves general manager Joe Nieuwendyk made in the offseason and will they reverse the Stars' fortunes.
Four years, no playoffs. Now the Stars have Jaromir Jagr, Ray Whitney, Derek Roy and Cody Eakin.
In a span of three days, weve been able to remake our team a bit and we like it, club owner Tom Gaglardi said. It fits very well with our long-term direction.
We had to give up a couple of assets to get there, but we like who weve brought in and the deals we made. We feel fortunate we got done what we wanted to get done in pretty short order. Were a better hockey team today.
Kings up against the odds
Twice is nice. But not likely.
The good news is that the Los Angeles Kings return to defend its Stanley Cup crown with basically the same roster as last spring.
The bad news is that no team has repeated as Cup champions since the 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings.
Take heart, Kings fans. Both Detroit and Pittsburgh made it to Cup Final in back-to-back seasons since then.
