NHL Rumor Rundown: Nash saga could drag on

Get used to the Rick Nash trade saga. It could drag on into training camp in September.

The Columbus Dispatch (via ProHockeyTalk) speculates that since the Blue Jackets have not come close to trading him, an awkward scenario could play out where Nash has two options: 1) Report to training camp and attract tons of media attention or 2) Stage the first Blue Jackets' holdout since 2006.

The Flyers are among the teams that have balked at Columbus' asking price. This could all be rendered moot, of course, if no collective bargaining agreement is reached and training camps are delayed.

Salary cap rollback?
The owners CBA proposal to the players' association calls for a rollback of the salary cap to 52.5 million, according to the New York Post's Larry Brooks (via ProHockeyTalk).

That would be a drop of nearly 10 million from last season's cap.

ProHockeyTalk's Joe Yerdon points out that 19 teams would have to slash salary to get under the proposed cap.

Green, Carlson close to deals
The deadline for restricted free agents to accept qualifying offers is Sunday, and the Capitals are close to re-signing RFA defensemen Mike Green and John Carlson, according to CSNWashington's Chuck Gormley.

Capitals general manager George McPhee called Sunday "an artificial deadline," however, because negotations can continue even after it passes.

Green, 26, has played just 81 games over the past two seasons and recently completed a four-year, 21-million deal.

Carlson, 22, is a free agent for the first time after his three-year, entry level contract expired. He has posted a combined 16 goals and 53 assists over the past two seasons.
