USA Today’s Mike Garafolo, who first reported the Kansas
City Chiefs would be interested in trading for Nick Foles, has followed up with
news that a potential deal was discussed with the Eagles last week. Don’t get
too excited though. The Eagles informed the Chiefs they intend to keep the
second-year quarterback.

It’s no surprise the topic would be broached at a time when NFL
executives are camped in Indianapolis for the Scouting Combine, and there is no
indication as to how serious talks were. That said, it doesn’t sound like they
were all that substantial from the Eagles’ point of view:

The person, who spoke to USA TODAY
Sports on condition of anonymity because the conversations weren't to be
discussed publicly, said the Eagles conveyed to the Chiefs what they've been
saying through the media – they like Foles and plan on giving him a chance to
compete with Michael Vick for the starting job.

To summarize, there is a widely-held belief Foles will not
fit in Chip Kelly’s offense, and a trade is forthcoming. Kansas City became a logical
destination the moment they hired Andy Reid.

The Eagles maintain Foles will have a chance to win the
starting job. Even if you don’t believe their words, the action general manager
Howie Roseman took to trade back into the third round and select Foles in last April’s
draft suggests he likes the kid. When that decision was made, Roseman had to
know there was some chance the Eagles could be moving on from Reid within a
year.

Meanwhile, you have to wonder what the Chiefs would be
willing to give up. Their second rounder also happens to be the 33rd overall
pick in 2013, a steep price for an unproven quarterback, but anything less than
a two seems low given the progress Foles made.

All of which is to say a swap may not be as likely as some
people think, even if the rumor won’t be going away anytime soon. Then again,
everybody is available for the right price, so if Reid believes strongly in
Foles developing into a franchise quarterback, maybe the Chiefs do come over
the top with an offer.
