The Birds are expected to interview Chip Kelly sometime over the
weekend, but he’s still the head coach at the University of Oregon tonight. The
Ducks (#4) are set to do battle with the Kansas State Wildcats (#5) in the
Fiesta Bowl at 8:30, giving fans an opportunity to see for themselves what the
buzz is all about.
Having said that, it’s tough to say how much we should
really take away from watching Kelly’s brand of spread offense operate at
the collegiate level. It’s very likely he will have to revamp his scheme for
the NFL, especially given its heavy reliance on the read-option play. Still, it might serve as a peak into what some of his overriding philosophies are.
Meanwhile, there is a competition brewing for Kelly’s
services, as he is expected to meet with the Bills and Browns as well. In Cleveland’s
case, many have observed Joe Banner is contacting
several of the same candidates as the Eagles, which most definitely is not a coincidence.
If this is in fact Kelly’s last game at Oregon, the
university has already lined up a successor in offensive coordinator Mark
Helfrich. It sure sounds like Kelly will be leaving for a
bigger pond, wherever he happens to land.
