Former Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchel was in court this week down in Orlando in front of a Federal judge who the former People's Champ hoped would show him some mercy. FredEx claims that head injuries he suffered playing football contributed to the tax fraud he plead guilty to earlier this year.

The details are sparse but WFTV out of Orlando had a reporter in the courtroom and writes:

Freddie Mitchell's attorneys had the judge watch a two-hour documentary about the link between NFL football and brain injuries.

The Lakeland native argued the disorder contributed to his crime.

Philadelphia Magazine reports the documentary was the very controversial PBS Frontline documentary "League of Denial."

We've had some fun at Freddie's expense over the years, but head injuries are not a matter worth joking about. That said, I think it's safe to question whether there really is a tie-in with head injuries here or if Mitchell is just looking for a remotely plausible excuse to get some leniency.

You can watch video of Mitchell entering the courtroom and his lawyer talking here. Freddie is not quoted on the case but he does get in a line about the reporter being at the court but not at any of his charity events.
