3 and Out: Marcus Smith making progress

Marcus Smith was not the first-round choice most Eagles fans coveted. In fact, since the draft, second-round choice Jordan Matthews has received a lot more hype at wide receiver.

But Smith, a 6-foot-3, 251-pound linebacker out of Louisville, has looked good in the early stages of training camp.

"Conventional wisdom coming out of the draft was that Marcus Smith was kind of a project for the Eagles," CSNPhilly.com's Reuben Frank said Wednesday.

"With Trent Cole, Connor Barwin, Brandon Graham -- the Eagles had some veteran depth at outside linebacker. But the first few days of camp, Smith has been impressive."

The Eagles took the AAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2013 with the 26th overall pick. Smith, along with the vets on defense, will be tasked with improving a unit that finished 29th in total yards allowed a year ago, so his progress is encouraging.

"He seems to be picking stuff up quicker than expected," Frank said.
