Chip Kelly: Mychal Kendricks ‘not going anywhere'

Brandon Boykin became the most recent player drafted under the Andy Reid/Howie Roseman regime to be shown the exit.

Mychal Kendricks won’t be the next.

Eagles coach Chip Kelly said adamantly Sunday that he won’t be dealing the fourth-year inside linebacker whose role is uncertain after the Eagles traded for inside linebacker Kiko Alonso and extended the contract of DeMeco Ryans.

CSN’s Derrick Gunn reported Saturday night the Eagles are holding onto Kendricks as an insurance policy for the 31-year-old Ryans, who is coming off the second Achilles tear of his career.

“Mychal Kendricks is not going anywhere, I can tell you that right now,” Kelly said. “You can write that down in ink, not pencil. He’s not going anywhere.”

Speculation kicked up that Kendricks was next out the door Saturday night after the Boykin trade. Boykin and Kendricks are both part of the 2012 draft class, the last for Reid, who was fired after the season.

Kelly, who seized all personnel say in January from Roseman, used a third-round pick on Jordan Hicks and signed Brad Jones in free agency. He also has special teams standout Najee Goode coming back from missing most of last season along with Emmanuel Acho.

The addition of Alonso and re-signing of Ryans suggested that Kendricks had lost his starting job and eventually would be dealt before the start of the season.

Even Kendricks wasn’t certain about his security when he reported for the minicamps.

“I don’t know,” he said when asked if he factored into the Eagles’ 2015 plans. “But I think so.”
