Eagles claim DT Jeremy Towns; waive DT Wade Keliikipi

The Eagles were awarded defensive tackle Jeremy Towns on waivers Monday, two days after Towns was released by the Bills.

The Eagles needed defensive tackle legs for practice after waiving second-year Wade Keliikipi who was injured earlier in the day Monday.

Towns, 26, spent his rookie training camp undrafted out of Samford with the Redskins. They released him at the end of training camp, and he landed on the Bills’ practice squad on Oct. 7. The Bills re-signed him after the season.

During the preseason and first part of the regular season, waiver claim priority is based on won-loss percentage the previous year, with the team with the worst record getting top priority.

The Eagles designated Keliikipi waived-injured with a foot injury.

With the addition of Towns, the Eagles are back to four defensive tackles in camp — starter Bennie Logan, plus Beau Allen, Travis Raciti and Towns.

The 305-pound Keliikipi, who played at Oregon, was an honorable mention All-Pac 12 pick in 2012 and 2013. He spent all of last year on the Eagles’ practice squad.

Keliikipi had two tackles in the preseason, one in each game. He played a lot in the first preseason game, 42 plays, sixth-most of anybody on the defense. He got 19 snaps Saturday against the Ravens. It’s not known when he got hurt.

Keliikipi is the fifth player the Eagles have released with an injury designation since Aug. 4.

They previously released linebacker Travis Long, linebacker Jordan DeWalt-Ondijo, safety Earl Wolff and defensive end B.J. McBryde with the waived-injured designation.

Once a player released with the injury tag clears waivers, his rights revert to the team releasing him.

Any player who doesn’t have four years of accrued pension credit must clear waivers before being placed on IR.
