Eagles free-agent targets: CB Davon House

Davon House, cornerback
Age: 25
Height: 6-0
Weight: 195
Last team: Green Bay Packers

Scouting report
House starred as a sub-package specialist in Green Bay’s multiple defense. A fourth-round pick in 2011 out of New Mexico State, House has started 14 of the 40 career games he’s played. He has two career interceptions, two sacks and a forced fumble. House has indicated that he’d like to re-sign with the Packers. He has size comparable to Byron Maxwell and could command a deal worth anywhere between $5 million and $7 million per year. He made $645,000 last season in the final year of his rookie deal.

Geoff’s take
I like that he’s young. I like that he played in Dom Capers’ defense. I like that he’s hungry and wants to start. More than anything, I like that he might be a cheaper alternative to Byron Maxwell. If the Eagles don’t want to pony up $10 million per for Maxwell, then I’d be fine with adding House. He’d also be a major upgrade over Bradley Fletcher, and he’s young enough to have around for a long time. The Eagles have to add a cornerback in free agency, but they don’t have to sign the No. 1 guy (even though I think they should). If it’s not Maxwell, House will do just fine.

Roob’s take
The cornerback market is so crazy this spring that a guy like House, who has never started more than five games in a season but has a pretty good reputation, could be in line for a deal worth in the ballpark of $7 million per year. I’m all for upgrading the cornerback spot, but that’s a lot of money for a guy who has started 14 career games and has two career interceptions. It’s very tough to project how a guy who has had success as a part-time starter will project as a big-money free agent, and the Eagles better be absolutely sure before they take that risk. I’d be more comfortable addressing corner with a draft pick or a more known quantity, like Maxwell, Brandon Flowers or Chris Culliver.
